INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT CENTER


Location - The Jackson State University Instructional Technology Support Center is located at the Mississippi eCenter@JSU.  The street address is 1230 Raymond Road, Jackson, MS 39204.  You may contact the center by calling 601-979-0245. 

Goal - Jackson State University's Instructional Technology Support Center aims to support the use of technological resources in traditional learning and classroom practices.  Its primary focus is targeting the infusion of technology and education while providing training and support to all faculty, staff and students.

Services provided through the center consist of the following:

Blackboard Learn 9.1 Support – Regular training schedule and support for the official JSU course management system, Blackboard Learn 9.1.  The schedule includes basic, advanced and expert training on Blackboard and the most efficient use of its components and resources.  Assistance is also provided in online course planning, development and implementation. Course Content Using Textbook e-Packs - E-packs are digital content created by textbook publishers that can be used by instructors to create their Blackboard course. Publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Addison-Wesley, and Prentice-Hall provide Blackboard e-Packs for their textbooks.  These packages include an electronic version of the textbook content along with critical-thinking activities, assignments, interactive media, sample syllabi, lecture notes, quizzes and test banks.   To request e-Packs, faculty should contact the publisher's representative.  To request assistance in obtaining a textbook e-Pack for your course contact the Instructional Technology Support Center at 601.979.0245.

Training (Group and One-on-One) - The center utilize faculty experts, power users, experienced staff, and graduate student assistants who specialize in the specific training areas available within the center through appointments and limited walk-in availability. 

New Faculty Technology Assistance - AIT offers new faculty special help to get quickly up to speed on instructional technology at JSU.  AIT Technical Support Team will work with incoming faculty and their department staff to facilitate one-on-one or group training sessions for new faculty.  New faculty is encouraged to schedule an office visit with an Academic Instructional Technology Specialist who will provide them with a personalized orientation to JSU instructional technology resources. Departmental Training – The center is pleased to arrange or provide specialized training to specific departmental needs upon special request.  Training may be provided for specialized departmental software, upgrades, or new departmental technologies, and technological equipment.

Workshops – The Center offers regularly scheduled workshops lasting from one to three hours.  Workshops are offered via Blackboard, web conferencing or virtual classroom settings, face to face, and other technology based methods of delivery.  Instructional Technology Specialists maintain specialized chat rooms and discussion boards to answer questions relative to specific training areas.  Access to these resources and workshop schedules are available on the AIT Training Center website.

AIT also provides training workshops for basic software packages utilized throughout the campus. Please take advantage of the various Information Technology Trainings available for all JSU Faculty/Staff. Technology Showcase - The Instructional Technology Showcase was developed to introduce faculty to current University’s technologies and new emerging technologies. Technology showcases are held monthly and require preregistration. Podcasting Classrooms - Audio capturing podiums are available in classrooms throughout the campus. The podiums allow faculty to capture audio instances of their course lectures, process for podcasting and publish the podcast to the JSU iTunesU website.  Each podium is equipped with microphones, local recorders, mixer, amplifier, audio streamer and computer.  Specific locations are College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, College of Education, and College of Business. To request assistance with using Podcasting Podiums contact the Instructional Technology Support Center.  

 

Audio/Video Editing Assistance is provided with creating and editing video and audio podcasts.  Additionally, assistance is available for developing training DVDs or other training media.

Imaging Services – The center offers assistance with scanning and enhancing images.

Video Conversion (VHS to Digital) - The Center offers faculty the ability to convert VHS tapes to DVD and multiple electronic formats. With various types of software, these formats can be viewed from a computer, streamed over the web, downloaded to a media player or simply archived for future use. Media conversion services are provided for image scanning, VHS to digital video, VHS to iPod, documents to Adobe pdf, documents to Word Processing Scanning, DVD and CD-ROM creation and duplication. 

To utilize these services you may contact the Instructional Technology Support Center at 601.979-0245 to discuss your needs with an Academic IT Specialist. Walk in service is available for faculty who want to convert their own.  Faculty with larger projects may use the center’s drop-off service.  Processing time will vary based on project size and complexity. An AIT Specialist will determine the turnaround time, procedures, required media, storage format, and other requirements for specific project needs. Document Conversion - (Document Scanning, Text to PC – OCR) – Assistance in converting hard copies of documents (syllabi, tests, etc.)

Software Consulting – Most efficient software for your area of instruction – The Center’s staff will research and evaluate software and other technological resources and provide expert advice to the departments based on their communicated needs.

Driving Directions From I-20:

Take EXIT 42A , Ellis Ave South, to Raymond Road and turn RIGHT. Proceed down Raymond Rd. approximately 1 mile, thru two stop lights. The e-Center will be on your RIGHT on the corner of West Highland and Raymond Rd.
